Unsnared Studio

A summer cohort led by Michael Compitello

June 2026

Build a Technique That Actually Works

Most musicians spend years refining their technique.

Fewer build one that is truly their own: a technique that adapts to their repertoire, supports their musical voice, and holds up under pressure.

Unsnared Studio is a selective summer cohort focused on doing exactly that.

Together, we’ll explore how to develop a custom-fitting musical technique—one that is:

  • Grounded in impactful musical expression

  • Flexible and responsive

  • Durable underpressure

  • Capable of supporting fast musical learning

This work begins with the snare drum, but the underlying ideas apply across instruments.

At its core, the process is simple: invention, play, and creativity in the practice room.

Where This Comes From

This cohort is built alongside my forthcoming book, Unsnared Drum Lab, which explores how performers can use creativity, play, and intelligent design to learn music more efficiently and perform more reliably.

This cohort is an opportunity to work with those ideas in real time, before the book is released.

Who This Is For

This cohort is designed for percussionists and educators who want to take a more active role in shaping how musicianship is built and perform better under pressure.

It is especially well-suited for:

  • Advanced undergraduate and graduate students working on demanding repertoire

  • Early-career professionals refining their technical approach

  • Educators interested in developing clearer strategies for diagnosing and teaching technique

You’ll likely find this valuable if you are:

  • working on challenging repertoire

  • feeling stuck despite consistent practice

  • looking for more control in performance situations

  • interested in building a more flexible, creative, and self-directed technique

While our work centers on the snare drum, the underlying ideas extend to any instrument.

What You’ll Do

Each session combines focused teaching with live diagnostic work on real playing.

  • We’ll take apart excerpts from your repertoire and identify why they aren’t working

  • We’ll build custom exercises on the spot to address those issues

  • You’ll learn how to vary and adapt those exercises as your needs change

  • You’ll test those changes in conditions that more closely resemble performance

Between sessions, you’ll apply these ideas in your own practice using structured prompts designed to help you:

  • diagnose problems more precisely

  • design better solutions

  • track what actually improves over time

Session Outline

  • Why your playing stalls

  • How to build a musical technique for you.

  • How invention and play support peak performance under pressure

What Will Improve

Through this process, you’ll begin to develop a technique that is:

  • custom-built for your playing and repertoire

  • flexible enough to adapt across musical contexts

  • reliable under pressure, not just in the practice room

  • efficient, reducing wasted time and repetition

  • expressive, supporting the sound and phrasing you actually want

You’ll leave with:

  • a clearer understanding of how to diagnose technical problems

  • tools for designing your own exercises

  • strategies for making practice more effective and transferable

  • a framework for continuing this work beyond the cohort

Schedule

Unsnared Studio will run in June 2026 as a short, focused cohort experience.

  • 3 live sessions (small group format), with a week in between each session

  • Each session includes both teaching and live diagnostic work

Participants will also receive guided prompts between sessions to apply the material in their own practice.

My Approach

I wasn’t always an efficient practicer.

For years, I struggled with how long it took me to learn music, and the gap between what I could do in the practice room and what actually showed up in performance. That chasm led me to study how musicians and experts in other fields build skills that last.

I rebuilt my technique around the music I wanted to play and how I wanted to play it. This program is a distillation of that process, shaped by my work with students and informed by research on creativity, learning, and performance.

What to Bring

Come with snare drum material you’re currently working on.

This might include:

  • a passage from a solo or orchestral excerpt

  • an etude

  • a broader technical issue you’ve been trying to solve (e.g., rolls, control at soft dynamics, rhythmic clarity)

You don’t need to prepare anything special beyond your current work.

During the sessions, we’ll use your material to:

  • identify what’s breaking down

  • design creative and flexible exercises to address those issues

  • test how those solutions hold up in different conditions

  • plan musical development over a number of practice sessions.

Between sessions, you’ll experiment with these ideas in your own practice, using my materials to help you refine and adapt what we build together.

The cohort is designed to work with work in progress: no need to refine material before taking part!

Cost

Standard Tier — $60

Includes participation in all sessions + digital copy of Unsnared Drum Lab

Premium Tier — $100

Includes everything above, plus:

  • a physical copy of the book (yay!)

  • a short one-on-one session focused on their playing.

    These sessions are:

    • individualized

    • focused on a specific technical or musical challenge

    • designed to go deeper into the material introduced in the cohort

You can bring a passage, excerpt, or technical issue you’d like to work on, and we’ll apply the same diagnostic and design process in a more focused setting.

Creativity in the practice room is the best way to get better. I’m excited to explore these ideas with you!
