Unsnared Studio
A cohort for motivated musicians with Michael Compitello
Fall 2026
Accomplish Your Goal. Build Musicianship That Evolves With You.
Unsnared Studio is a small, cohort-based studio for musicians and educators who want to take an active role in shaping how their musicianship is built, and who need their playing to hold up under pressure on a specific day.
Whatever you're preparing (the recital, the audition, the recording), the goal is not only to survive the date. The goal is to use that date to develop a better practice method.
If you have something on the calendar, this studio is built for you.
I wrote Unsnared Drum Lab to help you become your own teacher: to design a custom-fitting technique, learn music faster and more efficiently, and perform better under pressure through creativity in the practice room.
This studio goes further. We'll plan your learning together, sharpen the feedback you're getting on your progress, and put it all toward something concrete outside the practice room: the recital, the audition, the round.
Who This Is For
This cohort is designed for musicians with a real deadline in front of them: recitals, competitions, graduate school auditions, tours, recording sessions, major ensemble projects, or repertoire they need to bring to a new level.
It is especially useful if:
You are preparing music that matters to you.
You are working around a busy semester, teaching schedule, or performance calendar.
You can name at least one place where your playing is not changing in proportion to your effort.
You want help turning practice into something more targeted, creative, and reliable.
You want to learn from other serious musicians working through real problems in real time.
This may not be the right fit if:
You are looking mainly for a passive lecture series.
You do not have repertoire, a project, or a musical goal to bring into the studio.
You are not interested in experimenting with your practice between sessions.
You want one-size-fits-all technical assignments rather than targeted work built around your own playing.
What You’ll Do
Unsnared Studio combines ideas from Unsnared Drum Lab with a small studio community, bringing together training for the work musicians do alone and a learning community where real repertoire and real problems can be heard, named, tested, and revised together.
Across four group sessions, we’ll work directly from your repertoire and your goals. Each session has two parts: I’ll share some of the most useful ideas I’ve found about musical learning, drawn from my research into creativity, skill acquisition, practice design, feedback, and performance under pressure; then we’ll move into a studio-class format, where we’ll work together to diagnose issues, design solutions, test ideas, get feedback, and decide what to try next.
You’ll learn not only from your own work, but also by watching how problems get identified and solved across different players and situations.
Between sessions, you’ll work through short resources drawn from Unsnared Drum Lab and from scientific and artistic best practices for learning, refinement, feedback, and creative design. You’ll then apply those ideas through a structured plan built around your own weaknesses, timeline, repertoire, and goals.
The aim is practical: every session should give you something you can use immediately: a clearer diagnosis, a better practice experiment, feedback from the group, or a concrete next step for the music you’re actually preparing.
Participants will also meet with me individually after the group sessions for a 1:1 check-in, focused on whether your plan is actually working — and adjusting it if it isn’t.
By the end, you’ll have
Tools to help you learn and refine repertoire.
A technical development plan aimed at eliminating weaknesses and helping you speak with your own musical voice.
Concrete practice, refinement, and incubation plans for current repertoire.
A framework for soliciting, deciphering, and acting on feedback about your playing.
Practical ways to prepare for performance conditions and reduce the surprises that feed performance anxiety.
A clearer sense of what your musicianship needs to become next.
A community of like-minded performers interested in your growth.

These are resources that I would highly recommend to any musician looking to bring their performance to the next level!”
Session Themes
-
Before you can fix a problem, you have to name it precisely. We'll look at why your musical growth stalls, no matter how much you practice; break down the pressure points standing between you and the performances you want to give; and share habits of expert musical learners and performers.
-
We'll explore how performers can leverage creativity in the practice room to foster accuracy, precision, and expressivity on stage. You'll learn how to use Design Thinking to diagnose issues in your playing and invent fixes, respond to feedback in real time, and incubate effective exercises. The goal: rich mental models and myriad interpretive options.
-
We'll break down the habits of expert musical learners and the latest cognitive science, learning how to structure learning for maximum impact in minimal time. We'll cover how to structure practice sessions, plan learning over weeks and months to maximize preparation for big milestones, and integrate metacognitive work and frequent feedback to maximize efficiency, helping your practice compound with time.
-
What kind of musicianship best supports performing under pressure? We'll articulate hurdles to expressive, powerful performances in pressurized environments like auditions or significant performances, and integrate a number of strategies to make communicating musical ideas on stage as comfortable as in the practice room.

This approach trains us to work alone and learn from our peers.
Schedule
The cohort runs from September 21 to October 26.
Session 1 — September 28
Session 2 — October 5
Session 3 — October 12
Off week — October 19, for application
Session 4 — October 26
1:1 check-in — scheduled individually after the group sessions, focused on whether your plan is actually working and what to adjust
All group sessions meet Mondays from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Eastern / 8:00 to 9:30 a.m. Pacific.
All group sessions will be recorded, so if you can't attend live, you'll still have full access.
The cohort size will be limited to maximize collaboration and ensure there is room for real play, real questions, and real feedback.
What to Bring
Come with the specific thing you're preparing for, and the repertoire or program tied to it.
This might include:
The piece, etude, or program you're preparing
A technical issue that keeps showing up under pressure (passages that fall apart, control at soft dynamics, rhythmic clarity, nerves)
Questions about how to plan the weeks between now and your date
You don't need to have your materials together before you start. The cohort is designed for work in progress.
Bring one performance goal. Leave with a way forward
My Approach
I wasn't always an efficient practicer.
For years, I struggled with how long it took me to learn music and with the gap between what I could do in the practice room and what actually showed up in performance. That chasm led me to study how musicians — and experts in other fields — build skill, and why certain forms of practice lead to deep, flexible musicianship while others produce tension, inconsistency, and burnout.
I rebuilt my technique around the music I wanted to play and how I wanted to play it. This program is a distillation of that process, shaped by my work with students and informed by research on creativity, learning, and performance.
I know what it's like to have a date on the calendar — that gap hurts. This studio comes out of figuring out how to close it for myself, and out of years of doing the same work with students who had a specific performance they needed to be ready for.
The ideas here come from Unsnared Drum Lab, which lays out this approach in more depth. The cohort is where we apply it to your actual repertoire, in real time, before the day it matters.
